I swung the Hoplite at Theresa for 6 and passed to Zach, who drew and passed (not suspicious at all). This is a surprisingly powerful spell for one mana, especially with the Rebound. On T4 I cast Distortion Strike on the Hoplite, bumping it up to 6/6 and unblockable. Over to Theresa who brought out her general, and smacked me in the head for 2 hasty commander damage. I’ll add here that Deathtouch is a recurring mechanic in Zach’s deck, as you’ll see, and is a big pain for getting the Hoplite through with damage. ![]() I passed to Zach who brought out a Deathgaze Cockatrice (who doesn’t love that name?). On T3 I cast Battlefield Promotion, targeting Hoplite, turning it into a 4/4, and swung at Zach, dealing 4 commander damage. Completely coincidental that their earliest creatures were so similar. Zach cast a Thought Vessel (this card seriously needs a reprint) and Theresa cast a Thermo-Alchemist. I was able to cast my commander on turn 2. Zach came out swinging with a turn 1 Vampire Neonate. Game 1: Battlewise Hoplite vs Fell Specter vs Adeliz, the Cinder Wind So our starting life totals were 35 and commander damage went up to 18. But first I want to note that we went with slightly different numbers for the life totals and commander damage, as is the custom for Pauper EDH. ![]() We were able to play two games with our new decks, so let’s dig in and run through the games to see how our decks performed.
